Powerful diva of desire and dance-pop, queer musician Casper’s Caleb provides the perfect soundtrack for empowerment and rocking those sexy hips at the disco. Today, April 21, the city of Austin is writing the spirit of the mermaid into the history books by declaring Casper’s Caleb Day At the mayor. Tune in to see the honors awarded at noon on ATXN.TVand mark your calendars for May 7, when Hotel Las Vegas hosts the Woman Boy record release party with a lineup that all lives life as a work of art: queer rapper BabiBoihip hop star Mom Dukeand De Casper himself playing alongside Facebook featured players Sabrina Ellis and jacket.

To have a day declared in his honor is a great blessing. “Culture is one of the most important things we have in a society,” says De Casper, “and I’m honored that the people of the city I moved to to start a new life want to commemorate me in theirs.” Previously in the less tolerant region of North Carolina, he recounts via email that it was difficult to thrive in a culture that “reinforced daily that being gay was a sin. … I hid parts of myself to survive and try to do things as simple as keeping my job or running an errand without being hassled for my slight lisp, flabby wrists or painted fingernails.” After traveling 1,500 miles across the country, De Casper found the support and encouragement he needed in the local music community. Woman Boy is in part a way for him to prolong that same support. “I’m on a journey to be the most authentic person I can be, to be proud of who I am, and hopefully help others be proud and stay proud of who they are.”
