Kendrick Lamar Named America’s Most Wanted Musician

More than 30 musicians reach No. 1 in 50 states

My Telescope has announced new data highlighting the top musical artists performing in 2022. Hip-hop artists are tied to pop music as the dominant genre in the United States, with rappers taking the top spot in 20 states. Grammy-winning artist Kendrick Lamar, whose latest album Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers was critically acclaimed this year, was the most popular artist in eight different states.

Chicago trap rapper Lil Durk came in second to Kendrick Lamar as the most popular touring artist of 2022, winning in five states. While musical genre representation was diversely distributed across the country, hip hop was the most prevalent genre in southern states, with Lil Durk appearing as the most searched artist in Oklahoma, Mississippi, Arkansas, Carolina from the North and the South.

New England had a high concentration of pop artists. The list of winning artists in two states includes Bad Bunny, Billie Eilish, Greta Van Fleet, Harry Styles, Jack Harlow, Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, Pitbull, Post Malone and The Weeknd.

The top artists from California and New York were Latin artists Grupo Firme and Bad Bunny, respectively.

The share of research shows that hip-hop tied with pop for the most dominant musical genre, followed by rock, Latin, country and indie with four, three, two and one, respectively.

The data highlights a state-by-state breakdown of the top artist or band, based on Google search volumes when users search for concert tickets. Artists are then ranked by search share, a marketing metric used for a search term against a defined set of search terms.
