Singaporean musician Jeremy Monteiro sets up new jazz lounge to serenade KLites

If Covid-19 has taught us any lessons, it’s to never take life – and even its simplest pleasures – for granted. It is heartening to see industries such as live music and the arts rebounding from these difficult years. After all, what’s a show without an audience?
If a serenade of mellow jazz tunes is your ideal way to end a working week, Singaporean musician Jeremy Monteiro has some good news. The maestro revealed that Tin Box Group, a multi-concept lifestyle brand that operates a number of live entertainment venues and restaurants in Singapore, has made its foray into Kuala Lumpur. Monteiro is the lead partner and musical director of Simply Jazz, Tin Box’s intimate jazz lounge, and he will take on the same roles for the band’s KL outpost.
Simply Jazz is established alongside Simply Retro, a vinyl-based club and restaurant aimed at fans of retro music, and Simply Live, which features mandopop acts. All three venues will officially open at TREC KL in December.
Monteiro will work with established jazz pianist Michael Veerapen to curate KL’s shows, featuring local jazz artists and musicians before inviting international guests to perform between its locations. “We will initially depend on the very substantial pool in Malaysia. Around the first or early second trimester [of 2023]we are going to start having international artists,” Monteiro said.
