The Houston Tidelanders Announce Ben May’s Doctor of Musical Arts Degree | Texas News

HOUSTON, December 20, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — The Tidelanders are proud to announce that Ben Maymusical director, obtained the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts in choir direction, from the University of Houston Moores School of Music. The diploma was awarded December 17, 2021. In recognition of Ben’s accomplishments, leadership and contributions, the Houston Tidelanders Chorus issued a proclamation declaring the 17and “dr. Ben May Day.”

Dr. May has been leading the Tidelanders since August 2018. He brings great knowledge, preparation, enthusiasm, professionalism and friendship to the position of Director of Tidelanders. “Ever since I ‘discovered’ barbershop harmony in high school, I’ve loved the sound, the teamwork, and most importantly, the camaraderie that is present in tight-knit barbershop sets. I lead the Tidelanders, musically, because I hope to continue this tradition of brotherhood and unity; I want to help lead this choir because I believe that choral music can and should bring our city, our nation and our world together. “, said Ben May.

Dr. May is currently assistant director and professor of choral activities at Brazosport College in Lake Jackson, Texas where he directs Brazosport College Choirs. Dr. May holds music degrees from Westminster Choir College (Princeton, New Jersey) and Vanderbilt University (Nashville, TN). Dr. May is a member of the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia fraternity.

The Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) is the culmination of years of specialized musical study. Dr May’s dissertation was titled “Going to God through a Musical Process: A Structural Analysis of by David Lang the passion of the little match girl (2007).” “My play is called ‘the passion of the little match girl’ and it takes place by Hans Christian Andersen story ‘The Little Match Girl’ in the format of Bach’s ‘St Matthew Passion’, interweaving Andersen’s narrative with my versions of the crowd and the responses of the characters from Bach’s Passion,” said the composer David Lang Dr. May’s academic advisor was Dr. Betsy Cook Weber, Madison’s endowed music teacher. He worked closely with Dr. Jeb Muller and dr. Robert Smith during his studies.
